The operating principle of piezoelectric sensors is based on the piezoelectric effect of some dielectric materials and is a typical active sensor. When a material is deformed by a force, its surface becomes electrically charged, resulting in a non-electric measurement.
Piezoelectric effect: When certain dielectrics are deformed by a force in a certain direction, they are internally polarized and simultaneously produce charges of opposite sign on their two surfaces. When the external force is removed, they return to their uncharged state. This phenomenon is known as the piezoelectric effect. Conversely, when an electric field is applied in the direction of polarization of the dielectric, these dielectrics will also be deformed, which is called the "inverse piezoelectric effect" (electrostriction effect).
Crystals, barium titanate, lead zirconate titanate and other materials are excellent piezoelectric materials. Three types of piezoelectric element materials are commonly used in pressure sensors: piezoelectric crystals, polarized piezoelectric ceramics, and new piezoelectric materials. They all have large piezoelectric constants, good mechanical properties, good time stability and temperature stability, and are ideal piezoelectric materials.
Piezoelectric sensors have high internal resistance, so they need to be coupled with a high input impedance preamplifier circuit and connected to a universal amplifier, detector, display and recording circuit to prevent rapid charge leakage and reduce measurement errors.
The piezoelectric sensor preamplifier has two functions: one is to convert the high impedance output of the sensor to a low impedance output; the second is to amplify the weak signal of the sensor.
Depending on the operating principle and equivalent circuit of the piezoelectric sensor, the output can be either a charge signal or a voltage signal. Therefore, matched preamplifiers are also available in two forms: charge amplifiers and voltage amplifiers. Since the output voltage of the voltage preamplifier is related to the cable capacitance, most charge amplifiers are currently used.
