In industry, there is a special tool for measuring torque, it is called a strain gauge. Strain gauges are very sensitive sensors with very small dimensions, which need to be positioned to exact tolerances in order to accurately measure torque, and welding small cells can be a difficult task, requiring great care at the solder joints, as incorrect soldering can damage the gauges.
The structure of the strain gauge is shown in the diagram above, from top to bottom, the laminate, the strain gauge metal sensitive grid, the strain gauge insulating substrate, the laminate and the metal elastomer. It can be concluded that the strain gauges contain a variety of different materials and therefore have different coefficients of expansion. When the temperature changes, the strain gauges attached to the metal elastomer are stretched or compressed, creating additional stresses and resulting in a change in the resistance of the sensitive grid. Furthermore, the thickness of the adhesive applied to the metal elastomer varies from one strain gauge to another, so that each strain gauge varies somewhat.
Principle of strain gauges
The sensitive element converts force to strain, the conversion element converts strain to a change in resistance and the conversion circuit converts resistance to an elegant or current signal output. The operating principle of resistance strain gauges is based on the resistance-strain effect. The resistance-strain effect is a mechanical deformation of a conductor or a semiconductor material under the action of an external force, which results in a corresponding change in its resistance value, a phenomenon known as the resistance-strain effect.
